This unit works great if your primary concern is a hidden system.There are other conventional units that outperform it of course. I like the outside temp sensor and am using it to monitor my intake air temp.I also added a second laser detector so I have them front & rear but am disappointed I can’t add a radar antenna to the rear like the old model.

I have had different Manufacturers of Radars but by far this has been the best. Easy to use, Very good display of Signals, and the voice is loud enough to get your attention. I would buy another of this model if the need arises.

I bought this for my daughter for Christmas. It works as advertised. She got the warning well in advance of the radar speed trap.

I purchased this little gem and am I glad I did. It has saved me many times the purchase price. It has good range and has picked up every car I have been able to spot. The fuzz is getting smarter so don’t think that is a false warning they have just shut it off for a bit.

This item is a real turd. It goes off for no reason half the time when a police car is near it doesn’t seem to notice. It is worthless on the toll road it goes off none stop not sure why, it is the same in town. I bought it on sale if I would have paid full price I would really be upset. Go a different route. I also have a cobra and I wish I would have just stuck with that brand maybe, I don’t know

This is the second Whistler that I’ve owned with POP Alert and I’m very happy with it. In fact the moments after plugging in the unit and going for a drive I picked up an Austin Policeman clocking radar on the highway. No radar detector is fool proof, they’re just for reducing the risk of getting a ticket.

I bought this 2 months ago, works great. Dependable range, strong alert, good options. Have recommended it to friends. A good unit in the middle price range. Thanks.

I had an older Whistler brand detector for a couple years, very similar to this one. The voice alerts are identical even, so it was a smooth transition. The menus are about the same, only with extra options. The casing on this unit is nice, looks great with no shiny “chrome” on the top to blind you with the sun. The blue text LED display is pretty sweet, top notch. Very handy that it comes with extra wire to just connect up to the fuse box. The mount is nice too, good suction cups, they have yet to fall off.
The only issue I really have with it is that it is overly sensitive. I don’t mean a little bit, but a lot. I have everything turned down as far as it will go. As in, city 2, filter 2, etc. Which helps some, but this thing will drive you crazy if you don’t dial it in right away. Pretty much just went off 85% of the time, sometimes other cars would set it off. Or large box type trucks going by would trigger an alert. After getting most of the pulse and pop and Ka extra turned off (you know, all the selling points) it does a pretty decent job. It does pick up radar, it’s just unfortunate that it picks up so many other things too. So much so that it makes me sort of ignore it, so when it really does go off, I am slow to react.
I tried to give it time, see if I could just get used to it, but honestly if I were not over my 30 days I would just exchange it for another model.

To many times…the product doesn’t live up to the advertising…this one does. My truck don’t like to operate with-in the set speed limits, and this detector saves me a lot of problems…I like it and want to recomend it to anyone that gets in a hurry once in a while…or stays in a hurry!

I get about 3-4 False Ka Alert with PRO78SE everyday in commute..
This false Ka Alert(without Freq ID Spec),About 2-3 seconds full Ka9 Alert and goes away..this is problem with all new Whistler SE RDs(I also have 690se,and it has same problem false Ka alert)..I run Filter 2,pop off,x off,Ka max ID…..I already sold it and got Escort 9500ix..

I bought this unit to replace an older Uniden detector. This thing is much more sensitive than my old detector, yet seems to provide very few false returns. So far it has given me 100% early warning from radars in LA and MS. The flashing blue lights on the periscope display do a good job of getting your attention when you have the sounds cranked up! This is by far the best radar detector I have owned!

The Whistler XTR-550 Radar Detector works greats. It keeps me in check with my speed.

I love mine. I have been using it for about 2 weeks with no problems. It is the best radar detector I have had.

Had this for about 8 hours. Told my wife all day that I hope we pass a cop so I can see how well it does it’s job. Unfortunately, I got what I asked for. Pulled over the first day and it didn’t make a sound. Nothing. Absolute silence. What a piece of crap. Luckily I wasn’t speeding more than normal and the fine wasn’t huge, but just know that you get what you pay for.

Once the unit is on for two to three minutes it ususally gives a “Laser” alert that won’t stop. Quiet button doesn’t stop it – have to turn unit off. [...] will only accept opened/defective items for replacement with identical item. Since this one doesn’t work, I have no interest in getting another one just like it. Lesson: no Whistler, no [...]

I have had this item for about 3 weeks and have really put it to my own personal test.
Pro’s.
Price, Very user friendly (it’s menu is easy to navigate and manage options), It’s display is much improved as I can easily see it in daylight (it does not get any sunnier than here in FL.)
Performance wise, it operates fairly well on the highway, giving you plenty of time to alert you, even on a winding road. Good K, KA and POP alert on the highway. I could not attest as to an open hill road as we do not have many of those where I live.

In the city, my radar detector is victim of false alerts due to Building alarms and automatic door openers. I am not able to filter these out, not even with the City 2 mode engaged.
I wish, Whistler would come out, as soon as possible, with a RADAR LOCATOR, that will indicate the direction the radar/laser is coming from.
I hope somebody finds this review helpful.

The price was too good to be true, I bought it just for fun and impressed with it’s services, compared to price I paid.

I purchased this radar detector specifically for a long drive from San Diego to Redding, CA (about 13 hours each way). I knew that I’d have to be driving “expeditiously” to not go insane on such a long trip, but avoiding speeding tickets is a high priority.
To be quite honest, I didn’t expect much from this radar detector considering the price. I’ve used Cobra brand detectors in the past with mixed results, and had been around Valentine One’s to know how awesome they are. This one didn’t look special really, but it looked “good enough”. So here’s the gist…
POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS:
====================
1. Works as advertised…it’ll tell you about radar signals
2. The blue LED warnings lights definitely get your attention
3. Acceptable level of control over functionality
4. Its not bad looking
5. Its LOUD and will get your attention when it needs to.
6. I’m confident that it is very sensitive because its always going off
NEGATIVE IMPRESSIONS:
====================
1. The blue LED warning lights are too bright at night. The ability to turn them on/off or dim would be ideal.
2. Volume adjustment is trivial. Even at its quietest volume setting (with quiet mode OFF), its LOUD.
3. The mount is a bit wobbly, so the radar detector shakes as you drive (unless you wedge it against your rearview mirror as I did).
4. Not the prettiest display ever, but not horrible. I didn’t read the manual and I was able to understand it.
5. If city mode does anything, I can’t tell.
OVERALL:
====================
I definitely like this product and I would recommend it to a friend. I’ll always lust for the Valentine One, but this thing does its job and finds radar when its around.
Just remember: this radar detector won’t protect you from highways that are patrolled by aircraft. I saw the CHP officer coming from a mile away, but it didn’t do me any good since the airplane had already nailed me. Woops!

Recently purchased this RD, and it works great. Saved my butt several times already. I have a more expensive older model, and it’s just as good.
BTW, I had the speaker blow out on my older model, and I sent it to Whistler and they repaired it for a very minimal charge. Happy with the customer service.

You cannot beat this radar device for the money; it works well on every electronic signal well in advance of the sender. Excellent unit, blue light flashing is a real alert!
