Radar Detectors For Everybodys Budget…

The RX-65 Pro has pulled my fat out of the fire more than 10 confirmed times in the last 4.5 years. (RX-65 spotted the cops hiding in bushes, around corners etc. Because of the early alerts, I was able to make discreet speed adjustments and let my neighbors take the hit ;-) .

I was considering the Valentine 1 because my friend had one, and frankly it looks cool. Also it does out perform Bel on the close range laser bands, somewhat “better”; but as I have said before, I’m not sure it’s $200.00 better.

My Bel RX65 still out performed my friends Valentine 1 in the radar bands. (Even he was surprised!)

I have owned Bel equipment since 1982. I bought one of their very first detectors at a swap-meet for $100.00, (should have known better), that looked like a small-round coffee can. I think it only supported X-Band. I was not happy with its performance at all.

Bel let me upgrade to the (then) new slim-style detector FREE! X & K band supported.

In 2005 I purchased my RX-65 Pro online (not Amazon, sorry), and the guy made it CLEAR Bel would NOT cover the 1 year, but he would.

With the only exception of an indiscriminate occasional “power-reset” problem it has been 100% reliable and flawless!

Well worth the money. You may wish to consider the RX-65 Blue or the STi? Steath versions if you have the green-backs to blow.

Take care.

Very good product, just arrived, plugged in, went for a drive. Detected Sheriff from arround half a mile, pretty good considering it was an urban street. Like the way tones sound, dont like the fact that it falses a lot more than i expected. Will edit and add more experiences with it. Would recommend buying it ;)

Very good detector, senses K band 1/2 -3/4 mile away. At first it false detected KA quite a bit but found out the setting in the programs was for International instead of USA. Easy to change. Went by a laser the other day did not detect although he was pointing at another vehicle.

Good controls for adjusting volume, display, brighteness. Highly recommend to others and very good value from Amazon.

Up until this point this is the only radar detector I’ve owned, and it is a good product in most respects. I’d gotten speeding tickets frequently (at least one a year) prior to owning one, and in almost two years of driving with it, I’ve only gotten one ticket (which was not for speeding). However, recently I placed (not dropped) it into a bag with some other items while cleaning my car, and when I took it out, it had cracked along the side, after which it did not work at all. So while this is a good detector and it did save me some tickets, I would expect any product that costs over $300 to remain more durable for multiple years.

    Pros:
Good Range – Finds cops frequently, especially in the Chicago suburbs where they are always trolling for tickets. Even on the less sensitive settings, I’ve always had plenty of time to slow down (although it should be noted I rarely drive more than 20 mph over the limit). This device has not only reduced my # of tickets, but has also made me a safer driver (as I am more aware of my speed and generally more alert).

User-friendly – The main setup and settings are very easy to use; I scanned the manual briefly but probably wouldn’t have had to. There are some pretty high levels of customization available as well – for example, you can adjust the sensitivity to different types of radar individually – however, I personally didn’t mess with these, so I can’t speak to them. While the beeping is a little annoying until you get used to it, you can adjust the volume and mute it fairly easily.

    Cons:
Price – This unit will be a budget-buster for a lot of people, after mine broke I couldn’t even consider dropping $300 on a replacement unit. While I haven’t owned other radar detectors, I doubt that the features on this one make it worth paying six times as much as a lower-end detector.

False Positives – Seemed to be a fairly regular occurrence with this one even in City mode. For that matter, there didn’t seem to be much difference in sensitivity between city, normal, and highway mode, although as mentioned these can be adjusted manually. There’s an extent to which the range may be a little too good; I think it would sometimes find radar on nearby streets that I didn’t really need to know about.

Durability/Reliability – This is the biggest, and probably only serious, issue I have with this one. Part of this is a personal preference thing, but this isn’t priced like a $35 piece of junk; and I’d expect it to be able to handle a little abuse. Instead it broke after a couple years of what I’d consider fairly normal use and storage.

My overall recommendation would be that this is a good unit if you are looking at a high-end radar detector, however, be prepared to either be really careful with it or replace it in a few years. Buying the warranty and/or repair plan (which I did not do) is strongly advised.

I now have owned this radar detector for a little over a month and it has already saved me a few times. I bought the hard wire kit so it comes on automatically when I start the car. Well worth the extra money. There have been no false alarms and it does not go off when you pass commercial property alarms. So when it does go off you know that it is real! I would highly recommend over paying $500 for the Escort. Good value for the money.

You cannot beat this radar device for the money; it works well on every electronic signal well in advance of the sender. Excellent unit, blue light flashing is a real alert!

  • 7 Fearman

gives alerts appropriately most of the time, does have some false alerts, but not too many.

  • 8 Tenny

I purchased this radar detector specifically for a long drive from San Diego to Redding, CA (about 13 hours each way). I knew that I’d have to be driving “expeditiously” to not go insane on such a long trip, but avoiding speeding tickets is a high priority.

To be quite honest, I didn’t expect much from this radar detector considering the price. I’ve used Cobra brand detectors in the past with mixed results, and had been around Valentine One’s to know how awesome they are. This one didn’t look special really, but it looked “good enough”. So here’s the gist…

    POSITIVE IMPRESSIONS:
    ====================
    1. Works as advertised…it’ll tell you about radar signals
    2. The blue LED warnings lights definitely get your attention
    3. Acceptable level of control over functionality
    4. Its not bad looking
    5. Its LOUD and will get your attention when it needs to.
    6. I’m confident that it is very sensitive because its always going off

    NEGATIVE IMPRESSIONS:
    ====================
    1. The blue LED warning lights are too bright at night. The ability to turn them on/off or dim would be ideal.
    2. Volume adjustment is trivial. Even at its quietest volume setting (with quiet mode OFF), its LOUD.
    3. The mount is a bit wobbly, so the radar detector shakes as you drive (unless you wedge it against your rearview mirror as I did).
    4. Not the prettiest display ever, but not horrible. I didn’t read the manual and I was able to understand it.
    5. If city mode does anything, I can’t tell.

    OVERALL:
    ====================
I definitely like this product and I would recommend it to a friend. I’ll always lust for the Valentine One, but this thing does its job and finds radar when its around.

Just remember: this radar detector won’t protect you from highways that are patrolled by aircraft. I saw the CHP officer coming from a mile away, but it didn’t do me any good since the airplane had already nailed me. Woops!

Recently purchased this RD, and it works great. Saved my butt several times already. I have a more expensive older model, and it’s just as good.
BTW, I had the speaker blow out on my older model, and I sent it to Whistler and they repaired it for a very minimal charge. Happy with the customer service.

  • 10 Pegg

The price was too good to be true, I bought it just for fun and impressed with it’s services, compared to price I paid.

  • 11 Farino

I have found there are lots of speed traps where I live. I generally observe the speed limits but the hills sometimes cause speed to creep up. This unit helps keep me honest and avoid getting tickets. It gives ample advance warning and enough time to check and correct any speed errors.

Very robust construction, “dark mode” feature prevents display from becoming a beacon to other drivers who want to tailgate you thinking you will save them from a ticket (Not to mention attracting unwanted law-enforcement attention for the same reason).

It’s not cheap but compared to the cheap units, this thing far outreaches them and provides useful features instead of deceptive fluff. Go with the best. You will not regret it!

Here is my “short list” of the top performing windshield mount radar detectors which are available from any manufacturer and at any price. This list is grouped in order of decreasing performance. Models within a particular group have nearly identical performance:

    Valentine V1
    Beltronics STi Driver

    Escort 9500ix
    Beltronics GX65
    Escort 9500i

There you have it. That is the short list of the top performing windshield radar detectors.

In a nutshell, the V1 and the STi are designed primarily for highway driving and long road trips. The models listed in the second group are designed mainly for suburban and city driving since they feature GPS in order to filter out known false alert locations. Those false alerts are caused by either X band or K band microwave automatic door openers and by alarm systems which use radar motion sensors.

The V1 has front and rear antennas plus arrows to indicate where the radar source is located — front, back, or to the side. Yet the V1 is readily detected by the Spectre radar detector detector (RDD) which is used by police in VA and by the DSP in Texas to nab motorists who are using radar detectors. The STi, on the other hand, is completely immune to detection by the Spectre RDD or any other RDD since the STi does not emit any type of microwave radiation. In short, the STi truly is a stealth radar detector and its steath makes the STi worth its weight in gold.

I have extensively road tested both the V1 and the STi. Both perform very similarly in terms of overall performance, with the V1 having a very slight edge. Yet the STi’s stealth, combined with its superior quietness when used in cities or other suburban areas makes the STi the clear winner in my book. The STi, unlike the V1, is also extraordinarily easy to program in order to configure its settings to perfectly suit your needs. My one major caveat regarding the STi is that its built-in speaker isn’t very loud. But this issue is easily solved by installing the extremely loud amplified remote speaker which Beltronics includes with the STi. You can hear the remote speaker with the top down and with the radio blaring.

In short, the Beltronics STi Driver is my favorite windshield mount radar detector. It is so good that I use it all the time even though I also have the Escort 9500ci remote installed radar detector and laser shifter system installed in my car. I always operate one or the other radar detector in bar graph signal strength display mode with the other radar detector in radar frequency display mode. This way I not only know how strong a radar threat is, but also the specific nature of the radar threat. For example, 24.7 frequency Ka radar guns are relatively easy to detect, but 35.5 frequency Ka radar guns are harder to detect since these radar guns have very long and narrowly tapered radar antennas. You have to slow down immediately when detecting 35.5 Ka radar since most of the time there is no easy way to determine just how far away the 35.5 radar gun really is.

Finally, although the Beltronics STi Driver is my favorite windshield mount radar detector for my particular driving needs, it may not be the most ideally suited radar detector for you. For example, if most of your driving (or my driving) is suburban/city driving, then I would pick one of the radar detectors which I listed in the second group. On the other hand, if you are a road warrior who logs hundreds of interstate miles every month and if you frequently travel through VA or TX, then the STi Driver is your only real choice. Excluding these two states, then the V1 also is an excellent choice, and at that point it boils down to your own personal preferences as to what features between these two radar detectors which are most important to you.

If you buy a used STi, keep in mind that most likely it will not have any warranty. If you buy an STi from an unauthorized dealer, then it will have no warranty whatsoever. If you buy a used STi, then you should be willing to send it to Beltronics and have it flashed with their latest firmware which addresses several issues and which improves overall performance. Yes, there will be a fee for this service, but on the other hand, a used STi with the latest firmware flash will perform exactly like a brand new STi. Something to think about.

So, there you have it! I always try to cut to the chase and write unbiased product reviews.

Worth every penny!! Gives about 1/2 mile warning!! Awesome Product and accessories are metal not plastic.

  • 14 Ives

Called company to make sure Amazon was authorized dealer to cover warranty – Check this out – They have a list of over 100 unauthorized dealers, it’s on there site. Customer service is the worse. I would recommend the Whistler XTR-695 Laser/Radar Detector with Radar Signature ID, Laser Signature ID, 7-Color Display, Real Voice Alerts and External Audio Jack – It is a better price and has the latest features and they did away with the authorized dealer program – all are covered under warranty.

I’ve owned and used my STI everyday for two years. It is good about not falsing and I like the fact that I can invert the display. It came with a nice carring case, leather pouch and also a external speaker. I don’t use any of the last three mentenioned items and I doubt that many people do. The windshield mount is cheap. For such an expensive radar detector it seems that Beltronics would make a better one. I bought a windshied mount for a GPS and adapted it to work. I would rather that Beltronics drop the carring case and speaker and provide a better windshield mount. Now to the important aspect of the STI for which I purchased it. I’m finding mine less and less reliable already. The police in middle Tennessee are using something the STI does not detect about forty percent of the time. It’s obvious when they are there on the side of the road pointing something at you and there is no alert. Then again it will alert me over the hill, around the curve, two miles away. If I had it to do over I would purchase a less expensive model.

I have purchased 5 of these units in the past 6 years. The first 3 stopped working after one year and even though I had extended warranty, it was a pain to have it replaced. The last 2 that I purchased a couple of years ago have been working fine. One is the blue LED and the other one is the red LED. When I purchased my recent autombobile which has Blue Tooth as one of the standard features, things began to go down hill. Evidently Escort tunes up their devices to such sensitive levels that the detector goes off constantly and randomly and it stay on until I unplug the unit. Because of this, it has damaged both of my units to where not they do the same thing in one of my other vehiclse WITHOUT Blue Tooth. When I contacted the factory, they told me that I have to send them $120 and ship both units at my expens so they can check it out and maybe retune it. I’m upset because I don’t think they should charge anything since I’m not asking for any repairs to be done but rather for them to check the units and maybe retune them? They have rejected all of my requests and have insisted that they will not do anything without my $120. I would rather buy new units from another manufacturer than to spend another dime with them. Will never buy them.

  • 17 Daniel

After my second speeding ticket I knew I had to get one of these. After purchase and quick installation I was set and ready to go.

For the first 3 months it worked perfectly. Always told me when cops were near and pinging me, which just let me know to get off the gas and slow down until I pass them.

However, lately this Escort has been giving me more than enough false alarms, enough to the point where I don’t pay as much attention whenever it goes off. Oh, and I also noticed that when it’s cold outside, the Escort goes crazy and gives me nearly every kind of full alarm blast, even if I’m just sitting in my car in my garage at 5am warming to car up before work.

Overall I *was* pleased with the product, but as of late my trust in it’s accuracy is severely waning.

I used Escort Passport 8500 X50 for like 5 month and to tell you the trued it does the job. i actually tested this device when i was going on long trips. it catch the cop signal for like 2 miles ahead. Its not so cheap but if u can afford to buy, buy Escort Passport 8500 X50
